It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in lighttpd 1.4.35 (Web Server). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file http_auth.c of the component Log File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
mod_auth in lighttpd before 1.4.36 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary log entries via a basic HTTP authentication string without a colon character, as demonstrated by a string containing a NULL and new line character.
The weakness was released 05/25/2015 by JaanusKp as confirmed advisory (Blog). The advisory is available at jaanuskp.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-3200 since 04/10/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1055 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
When basic HTTP authentication base64 string does not contain colon character (or contains it after NULL byte - can be inserted inside base64 encoding), then that situation is logged with a string ": is missing in " and the simply decoded base64 string. This means that new lines, NULL byte and everything else can be encoded with base64 and are then inserted to logs as they are after decoding.
A public exploit has been developed by JaanusKp in HTTP GET Request and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at jaanuskp.blogspot.ch. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85289 (Fedora 21 : lighttpd-1.4.36-1.fc21 (2015-12250)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87358 (lighttpd Input Validation Flaw Log File Entry Injection Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at redmine.lighttpd.net. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (85289), SecurityFocus (BID 74813†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1032405†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-75579. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
