A vulnerability was found in Moodle up to 2.5.9/2.6.6/2.7.3/2.8.1 (Learning Management Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file mod/quiz/db/access.php of the component Quiz. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
mod/quiz/db/access.php in Moodle through 2.5.9, 2.6.x before 2.6.11, 2.7.x before 2.7.8, and 2.8.x before 2.8.6 does not set the RISK_XSS bit for graders, which allows remote authenticated users to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via crafted gradebook feedback during manual quiz grading.
The weakness was disclosed 06/01/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at moodle.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3174 since 04/10/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
By approaching the search of inurl:mod/quiz/db/access.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86032 (Fedora 23 : moodle-2.9.1-1.fc23 (2015-14987)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124077 (Fedora Security Update for moodle (FEDORA-2015-14988)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.7, 2.7.4 or 2.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
