GNU C Library 2.17 posix/regexec.c extend_buffers memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GNU C Library 2.17 (Software Library). This vulnerability affects the function extend_buffers of the file posix/regexec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the extend_buffers function in the regular expression matcher (posix/regexec.c) in glibc, possibly 2.17 and earlier, allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and crash) via crafted multibyte characters.

The weakness was published 01/29/2013 by Paolo Bonzini as msg00967 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0242 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71582 (Amazon Linux AMI : glibc (ALAS-2013-270)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350811 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for glibc: AL2012-2015-020).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81707), Tenable (71582), SecurityFocus (BID 57638†), OSVDB (89747†) and Secunia (SA51951†). Similar entries are available at VDB-9979 and VDB-65733. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
