Linux Kernel up to 4.0.5 OZWPAN Driver memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.0.5. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component OZWPAN Driver. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2015-4004. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.0.5 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component OZWPAN Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The OZWPAN driver in the Linux kernel through 4.0.5 relies on an untrusted length field during packet parsing, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and system crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was presented 06/07/2015 by Jason A. Donenfeld as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-4004 since 05/15/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 05/20/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88545 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2016-124)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196497 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-trusty Vulnerabilities (USN-2998-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88545), SecurityFocus (BID 74669†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50401†). See VDB-75725, VDB-75726 and VDB-75727 for similar entries.
