A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2008/Server 2012 (Operating System). Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in adfs/ls in Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1 and Server 2012 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the wct parameter, aka "ADFS XSS Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 06/10/2015 with FishNet Security as MS15-062 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-1757 since 02/17/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84060 (MS15-062: Vulnerability in Active Directory Federation Services Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3062577)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90052 (Microsoft Active Directory Federation Services Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS15-062)).
Applying the patch MS15-062 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19987.
