A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/5.5/6 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Channel Link Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 on Microsoft Windows XP SP2, and other versions including 5.01 and 5.5, allows remote web servers to bypass zone restrictions and execute arbitrary code in the local computer zone by redirecting a function to another function with the same name, as demonstrated by SimilarMethodNameRedir, aka the "Similar Method Name Redirection Cross Domain Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 07/11/2004. The weakness was presented 07/13/2004 by Paul with greyhats as MS04-038 (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0727 since 07/22/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After 4 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at freehost07.websamba.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100018 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Vulnerabilities (MS04-038)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3048.
