XenSource Xen 4.2/4.3/4.4/4.5 QEMU PCNET controller memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in XenSource Xen 4.2/4.3/4.4/4.5 (Virtualization Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component QEMU PCNET controller. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the PCNET controller in QEMU allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by sending a packet with TXSTATUS_STARTPACKET set and then a crafted packet with TXSTATUS_DEVICEOWNS set.

The weakness was disclosed 06/10/2015 by Kurt Seifried as XSA-135 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3209 since 04/10/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84139 (OracleVM 3.3 : xen (OVMSA-2015-0067)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196133 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu, Qemu-kvm Vulnerabilities (USN-2630-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (103740), Tenable (84139), SecurityFocus (BID 74809†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50615†). The entry VDB-75661 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
