A vulnerability was found in libmspack up to 0.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function chmd_read_headers of the file chmd.c of the component CHM File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The chmd_read_headers function in chmd.c in libmspack before 0.5 does not validate name lengths, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted CHM file.
The weakness was presented 06/11/2015 by Jakub Wilk as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-4469 since 06/10/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
