OpenBSD OpenSSH up to 1.233 Default Configuration loginracetime/maxstartup denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation of the argument loginracetime/maxstartup with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The default configuration of OpenSSH through 6.1 enforces a fixed time limit between establishing a TCP connection and completing a login, which makes it easier for remote attackers to cause a denial of service (connection-slot exhaustion) by periodically making many new TCP connections.

The weakness was presented 02/06/2013 by Nico Golde as not defined mailinglist post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-5107 since 04/30/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a private exploit are known.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71007 (RHEL 6 : openssh (RHSA-2013:1591)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42413 (OpenSSH LoginGraceTime Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.234 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at openbsd.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openbsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71007), SecurityFocus (BID 58162†), OSVDB (90007†) and Secunia (SA54572†). See VDB-68771 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
