The default configuration of OpenSSH through 6.1 enforces a fixed time limit between establishing a TCP connection and completing a login, which makes it easier for remote attackers to cause a denial of service (connection-slot exhaustion) by periodically making many new TCP connections.
The weakness was presented 02/06/2013 by Nico Golde as not defined mailinglist post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-5107 since 04/30/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a private exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71007 (RHEL 6 : openssh (RHSA-2013:1591)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42413 (OpenSSH LoginGraceTime Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.234 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at openbsd.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openbsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
