A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple QuickTime 7.7.6 (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown part of the component File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. QT Media Foundation in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-3664 and CVE-2015-3669.
The weakness was presented 06/30/2015 by WanderingGlitch with Zero Day Initiative as HT204947 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3665 since 05/07/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84505 (Apple QuickTime < 7.7.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
