A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.7.6 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component File Handler. QT Media Foundation in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-3664 and CVE-2015-3665.
The weakness was disclosed 06/30/2015 by kdot with Zero Day Initiative as HT204947 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-3669 since 05/07/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84505 (Apple QuickTime < 7.7.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123683 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2015-06-30-5)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19967.
