The Windows Forms (aka WinForms) component in Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, and 4.5 does not properly restrict the privileges of a callback function during object creation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted XAML browser application (XBAP) or (2) a crafted .NET Framework application, aka "WinForms Callback Elevation Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 02/12/2013 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS13-015 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0073 since 11/27/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/28/2024). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64576 (MS13-015: Vulnerability in .NET Framework Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2800277)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
