OLE in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT Gold and 8.1 allows remote attackers to gain privileges via crafted input, as demonstrated by a transition from Low Integrity to Medium Integrity, aka "OLE Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-2417.

The weakness was disclosed 07/14/2015 as MS15-075 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-2416 since 03/19/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/31/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84741 (MS15-075: Vulnerabilities in OLE Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3072633)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91071 (Microsoft Windows OLE Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS15-075)).

Applying the patch MS15-075 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20189.
