A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 7/Server 2003/Server 2008/Vista/XP (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Win32k Application Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Race condition in win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 allows local users to gain privileges, and consequently read the contents of arbitrary kernel memory locations, via a crafted application, a different vulnerability than other CVEs listed in MS13-016.
The weakness was shared 02/12/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk (j00ru) with Google Security Team as MS13-016 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1267 since 01/12/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64577 (MS13-016: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2778344)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90867 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS13-016)).
Applying the patch KB2778344 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
