The Client/Server Run-time Subsystem (CSRSS) in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and R2 SP1 and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Reference Count Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 02/12/2013 by Max DeLiso as MS13-019 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0076 since 11/27/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64580 (MS13-019: Vulnerability in Windows Client/Server Run-time Subsystem (CSRSS) Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2790113)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90865 (Microsoft Windows Client-Server Runtime Subsystem Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS13-019)).

Applying the patch KB2790113 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
