A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in BitTorrent and uTorrent (Peer-to-Peer Software) (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component URI Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
BitTorrent and uTorrent allow remote attackers to inject command line parameters and execute arbitrary commands via a crafted URL using the (1) bittorrent or (2) magnet protocol.
The weakness was disclosed 07/20/2015 as ZDI-15-358 as not defined advisory (ZDI). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-5474 since 07/10/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
