Clavister Eagle E7 VLAN privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Clavister Eagle E7 (Firewall Software) (affected version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component VLAN Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 08/05/2014. The weakness was shared 07/28/2015 by Oliver Kunz and Marc Ruef with scip AG as sID 76819 as confirmed entry (scip VulDB). It is possible to read the advisory at scip.ch. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A private exploit has been developed by Oliver Kunz and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 357 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. We tested, how virtual network separation is affected on firewall restarts. First, verify successful connection when both system are connected to 'default'. If the verification was successful, move one system to vlan-scip-2 and repeat the test. After completion, move second system to vlan-scip-1 and repeat the test.

The system does not respect VLAN tagging for 76 seconds after a cold start (power-up). A shutdown of the system via console did not have the same effect.
