Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component SCTP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in net/sctp/socket.c in the Linux kernel before 4.1.2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (list corruption and panic) via a rapid series of system calls related to sockets, as demonstrated by setsockopt calls.
The weakness was disclosed 06/12/2015 with Red Hat as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-3212 since 04/10/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84925 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2015-565)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175492 (Debian Security Update for linux (DSA 3329-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84925), SecurityFocus (BID 76082†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1033169†). The entries VDB-76062, VDB-76352, VDB-76831 and VDB-76848 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
