A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Plupload up to 2.1.1 on WordPress (WordPress Plugin). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file plupload.flash.swf. The manipulation of the argument target with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Ephox (formerly Moxiecode) plupload.flash.swf shim 2.1.2 in Plupload, as used in WordPress 3.9.x, 4.0.x, and 4.1.x before 4.1.2 and other products, allows remote attackers to execute same-origin JavaScript functions via the target parameter, as demonstrated by executing a certain click function, related to _init.as and _fireEvent.as.
The weakness was published 08/05/2015 by Michael Kapfer (Basti) (Website). The advisory is shared at codex.wordpress.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-3439 since 04/28/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83918 (Debian DLA-236-1 : wordpress security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 2.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
