As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
patch in FreeBSD 10.1 before 10.1-RELEASE-p17, 10.2 before 10.2-BETA2-p3, 10.2-RC1 before 10.2-RC1-p2, and 0.2-RC2 before 10.2-RC2-p1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a crafted patch file.
The weakness was disclosed 08/05/2015 by Martin Natano as FreeBSD-SA-15:18.bsdpatch as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1418 since 01/27/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
Due to insufficient sanitization of the input patch stream, it is possible for a patch file to cause patch(1) to pass certain ed(1) scripts to the ed(1) editor, which would run commands.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92892 (FreeBSD : FreeBSD -- shell injection vulnerability in patch(1) (0d090952-600a-11e6-a6c3-14dae9d210b8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
