A vulnerability was found in WordPress up to 4.2.3 (Content Management System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function hash_equals of the component Widget Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. SQL injection vulnerability in the wp_untrash_post_comments function in wp-includes/post.php in WordPress before 4.2.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via a comment that is mishandled after retrieval from the trash.
The weakness was shared 08/04/2015 by Netanel Rubin (Alex) with WordPress Security Team as WordPress 4.2.4 Security and Maintenance Release as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at wordpress.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2213 since 03/05/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85546 (Debian DLA-294-1 : wordpress security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11552 (WordPress Prior to 4.2.4 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 4.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
