Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU Samba 3.0.2/3.0.2a/3.0.3/3.0.4 (File Transfer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component SWAT HTTP Basic Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT) in Samba 3.0.2 to 3.0.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an invalid base-64 character during HTTP basic authentication.
The bug was discovered 04/28/2004. The weakness was published 07/22/2004 by Evgeny Demidov (Website). The advisory is available at samba.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0600 since 06/23/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 83 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17720 (Samba SWAT 3.0.2 - 3.0.4 HTTP Basic Auth base64 Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86669 (Samba Web Administration Tool Base64 Decoder Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 3.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at us2.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2598. In this case the pattern Authorization|3A| Basic is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2920.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16785), Exploit-DB (364), Tenable (17720), SecurityFocus (BID 10780†) and OSVDB (8190†). secunia.com is providing further details.
