The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2015 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Inc. as MS15-080 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-2459 since 03/19/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85348 (MS15-080 : Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Graphics Component Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3078662)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91085 (Microsoft Graphics Component Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-080)).
Applying the patch MS15-080 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20324.
