A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office (Office Suite Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Word 2007 SP3, Office 2010 SP2, Word 2010 SP2, and Office for Mac 2011 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted document, aka "Microsoft Office Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 08/11/2015 by Steven Vittitoe with Google Project Zero as MS15-081 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2469 since 03/19/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110258 (Microsoft Office Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-081)).
Applying the patch MS15-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20308.
