A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in libin up to 1.30. Affected by this issue is the function stringprep_utf8_to_ucs4 of the component UTF-8 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. The stringprep_utf8_to_ucs4 function in libin before 1.31, as used in jabberd2, allows context-dependent attackers to read system memory and possibly have other unspecified impact via invalid UTF-8 characters in a string, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.

The weakness was published 08/12/2015 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2059 since 02/23/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
