mar_read.c in the Updater in Mozilla Firefox before 40.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.2 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write) via a crafted name of a Mozilla Archive (aka MAR) file.
The weakness was shared 08/11/2015 by Holger Fuhrmannek as MFSA 2015-85 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-4482 since 06/10/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
