A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.0 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component CoreText. CoreText in Apple iOS before 8.4.1 and OS X before 10.10.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted font file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-5755.
The weakness was presented 08/11/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel with Google Project Zero as HT205030 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5761 since 08/06/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90315 (Apple TV < 7.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124144 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2015-09-16-3)).
Upgrading to version 8.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
