A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3789 since 05/07/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85409 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2015-006)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123826 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2015-08-20-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
