Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.10.4 (Operating System). This affects an unknown part of the component SceneKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
SceneKit in Apple OS X before 10.10.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 08/11/2015 by Maxime Villard with Google Security Team as HT205031 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3783 since 05/07/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research in Ruby and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85409 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2015-006)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123806 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.5 and Security Update 2015-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-08-13-2)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
