A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.10.4 (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component Quartz Composer Framework. Quartz Composer Framework in Apple OS X before 10.10.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted QuickTime file.
The weakness was shared 08/17/2015 by Maxime Villard with Google Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5771 since 08/06/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85409 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2015-006)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123806 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.5 and Security Update 2015-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-08-13-2)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
