Details
A vulnerability has been found in RubyGems up to 2.0.16/2.2.4/2.4.7 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument hostname with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
RubyGems 2.0.x before 2.0.17, 2.2.x before 2.2.5, and 2.4.x before 2.4.8 does not validate the hostname when fetching gems or making API request, which allows remote attackers to redirect requests to arbitrary domains via a crafted DNS SRV record with a domain that is suffixed with the original domain name, aka a "DNS hijack attack." NOTE: this vulnerability exists because to an incomplete fix for CVE-2015-3900.
The weakness was published 08/25/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at trustwave.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-4020 since 05/18/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
