Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 4.1.5 on x86-64bit (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown processing of the file arch/x86/entry/entry_64.S of the component NMI Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-17. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
arch/x86/entry/entry_64.S in the Linux kernel before 4.1.6 on the x86_64 platform does not properly determine when nested NMI processing is occurring, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (skipped NMI) by modifying the rsp register, issuing a syscall instruction, and triggering an NMI.
The weakness was released 08/31/2015 by Andy Lutomirski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-3291 since 04/10/2015. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
