ISC BIND up to 9.8.8/9.9.7-P2/9.10.2-P3 DNSSEC Key buffer.c input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND up to 9.8.8/9.9.7-P2/9.10.2-P3. It has been classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file buffer.c of the component DNSSEC Key Handler. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5722. There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND up to 9.8.8/9.9.7-P2/9.10.2-P3 (Domain Name Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file buffer.c of the component DNSSEC Key Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was released 09/02/2015 as AA-01287 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.isc.org. The public release was coordinated with ISC. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5722 since 08/03/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

Parsing a malformed DNSSEC key can cause a validating resolver to exit due to a failed assertion in buffer.c. It is possible for a remote attacker to deliberately trigger this condition, for example by using a query which requires a response from a zone containing a deliberately malformed key. (...) Recursive servers are at greatest risk but an authoritative server could be affected if an attacker controls a zone the server must query against to perform its zone service. Servers which are affected may terminate with an assertion failure, causing denial of service to all clients.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 30 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86765 (AIX 6.1 TL 9 : bind (IV78091)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185115 (HP-UX BIND service running named Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX03511)).

Upgrading to version 9.9.8rc1 or 9.10.3rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9.9.7-P3/9.10.2-P4 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21122.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (106089), Tenable (86765), SecurityFocus (BID 76605†), SecurityTracker (ID 1033452†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53759†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-76834. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
