A vulnerability was found in ClearSwift MIMEsweeper for SMTP up to 5.4. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file MSWPMM/Common/Error.aspx of the component Web Frontend. The manipulation of the argument email with the input value <script>alert("xss")</script> leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 07/17/2009. The weakness was disclosed 02/18/2013 by Anastasios Monachos (secuid0) as MIMEsweeper For SMTP 5.5 Cross Site Scripting as confirmed advisory (Website) via Packetstorm. The advisory is shared at packetstormsecurity.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with ClearSwift. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Anastasios Monachos (secuid0) in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1291 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:/MSWPMM/ it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 5.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling Web Server Port. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
