Windows Media Center in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Media Center link (mcl) file, aka "Windows Media Center RCE Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 09/08/2015 by Aaron with TrendMicro as MS15-097 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2509 since 03/19/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by R-73eN in Python and been published 3 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85884 (MS15-100: Vulnerability in Windows Media Center Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3087918)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
