F5 BIG-IP up to 11.x Configuration Utility path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in F5 BIG-IP up to 11.x (Firewall Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Configuration Utility. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the configuration utility in F5 BIG-IP before 12.0.0 and Enterprise Manager 3.0.0 through 3.1.1 allows remote authenticated users to access arbitrary files in the web root via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 09/09/2015 as SOL17253 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.f5.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-4040 since 05/19/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

A public exploit has been developed by Karn Ganeshen and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85891 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : BIG-IP Configuration utility vulnerability (SOL17253)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370203 (F5 BIG-IP ASM Configuration Utility Directory Traversal Vulnerability (K17253)).

Upgrading to version 12.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (38448), Tenable (85891), SecurityTracker (ID 1033532†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52814†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
