A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Bugzilla up to 5.0.0 (Bug Tracking Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file Util.pm of the component Email Address Handler. The manipulation with the input value @mozilla.com.example.com leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Util.pm in Bugzilla 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x before 4.2.15, 4.3.x and 4.4.x before 4.4.10, and 5.x before 5.0.1 mishandles long e-mail addresses during account registration, which allows remote attackers to obtain the default privileges for an arbitrary domain name by placing that name in a substring of an address, as demonstrated by truncation of an @mozilla.com.example.com address to an @mozilla.com address.
The weakness was published 09/10/2015 by Netanel Rubin as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-4499 since 06/10/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85925 (FreeBSD : Bugzilla security issues (ea893f06-5a92-11e5-98c0-20cf30e32f6d)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11525 (Bugzilla Security Bypass Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 4.4.10 or 5.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
