Fabrice Bellard QEMU ne2000_receive memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ne2000_receive. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the ne2000_receive function in hw/net/ne2000.c in QEMU before 2.4.0.1 allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (instance crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to receiving packets.

The weakness was shared 09/15/2015 by Qinghao Tang as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5279 since 07/01/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86023 (Debian DSA-3361-1 : qemu - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168989 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for kvm (SUSE-SU-2016:1785-1)).

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (106356), Tenable (86023), SecurityFocus (BID 76746†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52989†). The entry VDB-79100 is related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
