A vulnerability has been found in Web Reference Database up to 0.9.6 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file rss.php/search.php. The manipulation of the argument where/sqlQuery with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in Web Reference Database (aka refbase) through 0.9.6 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via (1) the where parameter to rss.php or (2) the sqlQuery parameter to search.php, a different issue than CVE-2015-7382.
The weakness was published 09/28/2015 (Website). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-6009 since 08/14/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Mohab Ali and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:rss.php/search.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
