Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.4.32 (Operating System). Affected is the function call_console_drivers of the file kernel/printk.c. The manipulation of the argument log_prefix() Calls with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The log_prefix function in kernel/printk.c in the Linux kernel 3.x before 3.4.33 does not properly remove a prefix string from a syslog header, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and system crash) by leveraging /dev/kmsg write access and triggering a call_console_drivers function call.
The weakness was disclosed 05/07/2012 by Alexandre Simon as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1772 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69942 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (ELSA-2013-2546)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166437 (OpenSuSE Security Update for 3.0.80 Kernel Update (openSUSE-SU-2013:1187-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.4.33 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82298), Tenable (69942), SecurityFocus (BID 58118†), OSVDB (90558†) and Secunia (SA52366†). The entries VDB-7779, VDB-8067, VDB-8068 and VDB-8069 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
