Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apport up to 2.18. This issue affects the function kernel_crashdump of the file /var/crash/vmcore.log. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
kernel_crashdump in Apport before 2.19 allows local users to cause a denial of service (disk consumption) or possibly gain privileges via a (1) symlink or (2) hard link attack on /var/crash/vmcore.log.
The weakness was published 10/01/2015 by halfdog (Website). The advisory is shared at launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1338 since 01/22/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by halfdog and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:var/crash/vmcore.log it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86145 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 15.04 : apport vulnerability (USN-2744-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170206 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for apport (SUSE-SU-2017:1938-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.19 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
