Details
A vulnerability was found in libxml2 (Document Processing Software) (the affected version unknown). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part of the component XML Internal Entity Expansion Handler. The manipulation of the argument ENTITY with the input value <!ENTITY a "xxx…"]><bomb>&a;&a;&a;...</bomb> leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
libxml2 2.9.0 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via an XML file containing an entity declaration with long replacement text and many references to this entity, aka "internal entity expansion" with linear complexity.
The weakness was released 02/19/2013 by Kurt Seifried as CVEs for libxml2 and expat internal and external XML entity expansion as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0338 since 12/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Kurt Seifried in XML and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68767 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : libxml2 (ELSA-2013-0581)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216062 (VMware ESXi 4.0.0 Patch Release ESXi400-201310001 Missing (KB2059496)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68767), SecurityFocus (BID 48056†), OSVDB (90631†), Secunia (SA52277†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028212†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-6348, VDB-7759, VDB-7835 and VDB-68676. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
