Linux Kernel up to 4.2.2 SCTP Socket net/sctp/protocol.c sctp_init memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.2.2 (Operating System). This issue affects the function sctp_init of the file net/sctp/protocol.c of the component SCTP Socket Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The sctp_init function in net/sctp/protocol.c in the Linux kernel before 4.2.3 has an incorrect sequence of protocol-initialization steps, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic or memory corruption) by creating SCTP sockets before all of the steps have finished.

The weakness was shared 10/19/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at security-tracker.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-5283 since 07/01/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86668 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124484 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2015:2152)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86668), SecurityFocus (BID 77058†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54068†). The entries VDB-75699 and VDB-78716 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
