A vulnerability was found in Adobe Flash Player (Multimedia Player Software) (version now known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Type Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Adobe Flash Player before 18.0.0.255 and 19.x before 19.0.0.226 on Windows and OS X and before 11.2.202.540 on Linux allows attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging an unspecified "type confusion," a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-7648.
The weakness was disclosed 10/18/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at helpx.adobe.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7647 since 10/01/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 3 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86423 (Adobe Flash Player <= 19.0.0.207 Vulnerability (APSB15-27)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100261 (Microsoft Windows Update for Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player in Internet Explorer (KB3105216)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 22421.
