Use-after-free vulnerability in Google Chrome before 25.0.1364.152 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors involving an SVG animation.
The weakness was disclosed 03/04/2013 by Atte Kettunen with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as 168982 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is available at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0905 since 01/07/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65067 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (40d5ab37-85f2-11e2-b528-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120988 (Google Chrome Prior to 25.0.1364.152 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 25.0.1364.152 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at codereview.chromium.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
