Apple iOS up to 9.0 Graphics Driver type confusion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 9.0 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Graphics Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

com.apple.driver.AppleVXD393 in the Graphics Driver subsystem in Apple iOS before 9.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted app that leverages an unspecified "type confusion."

The weakness was presented 10/21/2015 by William Redwood (Proteas) with Qihoo 360 as HT205370 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-6986 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

A type confusion issue existed in AppleVXD393. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 77268†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53835†). See VDB-78724, VDB-78725, VDB-78727 and VDB-78728 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
