Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.0 Disk Images memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Disk Images. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Disk Images component in Apple iOS before 9.1 and OS X before 10.11.1 misparses images, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted app.

The weakness was shared 10/21/2015 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT205375 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-6995 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A memory corruption issue existed in the parsing of disk images. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86654 (Mac OS X < 10.11.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124182 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2015-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-10-21-4)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
