Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.0 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component IOAcceleratorFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
IOAcceleratorFamily in Apple iOS before 9.1, OS X before 10.11.1, and watchOS before 2.0.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted app.
The weakness was presented 10/21/2015 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT205375 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-6996 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue existed in IOAcceleratorFamily. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86654 (Mac OS X < 10.11.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124182 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2015-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-10-21-4)).
