A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Script Editor. Script Editor in Apple OS X before 10.11.1 allows remote attackers to bypass an intended user-confirmation requirement for AppleScript execution via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was published 10/21/2015 by Joe Vennix with Rapid7 as HT205375 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7007 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. In some circumstances, Script Editor did not ask for user confirmation before executing AppleScripts. This issue was addressed by prompting for user confirmation before executing AppleScripts.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 5 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86654 (Mac OS X < 10.11.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124182 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2015-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-10-21-4)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21642.
