A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 7/Server 2008/Server 2008 R2/Vista (Operating System) and classified as critical. The weakness was presented 11/10/2015 by Nils with Google Project Zero as MS15-117 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-6098 since 08/14/2015. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86824 (MS15-117: Security Update for NDIS to Address Elevation of Privilege (3101722)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91104 (Microsoft Windows NDIS Privilege of Elevation Vulnerability (MS15-117)).
Applying the patch MS15-117 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
